Styles of Massage

We offer these styles of massage at Shear Indulgence

Swedish

Swedish massage is the most common type of massage therapy; its main purpose is to place your body into a wonderful state of relaxation. It can also be used for pain management and injury recovery.  When you get a Swedish massage, your therapist will use long, smooth strokes, kneading, and circular motions while also using an oil or lotion.  Swedish massage strokes are often performed in the path of your blood moving towards your heart and can be very mild and soothing.  If you have never received a massage before, this may be a great first time option for you.

Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massage is another common form of massage techniques; its main purpose is to help alleviate feelings of pain or tightness in the body.  Usually such feelings are brought on by injuries or overexertion that has brought strain to your muscles.  As the name suggests, deep tissue massages target the deep areas of your muscles in an effort to release muscle tension and to increase blood flow to the area. This is greatly beneficial because stressed muscles in your body can create a blockage that prevents oxygen and nutrients from arriving at their correct destinations, which then creates inflammation and a buildup of toxins in muscles.

Deep tissue massage can also heal any remaining scar tissue from prior injuries.  Swedish and deep tissue massage techniques are quite similar except deep tissue techniques will include more pressure and slower strokes.

Sports

Sports massage therapy is targeted towards anyone participating in sports or activities of all kinds and at all levels.  Whether you are a college athlete or part of a morning jogging group, sports massage could be a great option for you.  Sports massage therapy is usually tailored toward the athlete, their specific sport, and whatever issues their activity is causing them.  Depending on the sport, there will be certain areas of the body that will likely be over worked and stressed from the recurring motions involved.

Sports massage therapy can also be used prior to your activity to assist with injury prevention and reduce recovery time.  Many athletes that utilize sports massage techniques are finding they have increased flexibility, more energy, better endurance, and fewer injuries.   Sports massage helps prepare your body for activity by placing it in its best possible performance mode.

reflexology

Reflexology is a wholistic discipline using the hands to apply alternating and firm pressures to the feet, hands or ears to stimulate physiological changes in the body through reflexes and the nervous system.

some of the benefits of reflexology include its ability to stimulate nerve function, increases energy, boosts circulation, induces a deep state of relaxation, stimulates the central nervous system, speeds recovery after injury or surgery, helps improve sleep, reduces depression, and relieves pain

Hot Stones

These types of massages include the use of hot stones in order to bring warmth and pressure to various areas around the spine.  When you apply heat to tight, sore, or injured areas, it can help release tension, soothe sore muscles, and jumpstart your bodies healing process. The stones can also be used to help your massage therapist knead more deeply to better access your tissues.

Cupping

A more modern version of cupping, which is used at Shear Indulgence, uses a rubber pump to create the vacuum inside the cup. These are pliable enough to be moved from place to place on the skin and produce a massage-like effect.

cupping therapy can reduce pain and inflammation throughout the body. And they say it can promote mental and physical relaxation and well-being.

Side Effects of Cupping Therapy

Cupping is considered to be safe when performed by trained health care professionals. Potential side effects include:

  • Mild discomfort
